We will be showcasing marshals and their stories, from around the world as well as look into what attracted them to motorsport. You can follow the full campaign here or on social media using #MarshalsMatter.
This time we take a look at Ashley Harwood, British marshal.
Number of years marshalling – I started in March 2012 so, this is my 8th year.
Favourite Circuit – This is a tough one, in the UK I’d have to say Anglesey because it’s just stunning there. Overall though I think I’d have to go with Spa in Belgium. I’ve been fortunate to work different posts and it’s always exciting.
Standout moment whilst marshalling – There are quite a few, but I think I would have to say flagging at the first corner for the WEC and IMSA event at Sebring in 2019. That was very special.
One event anyone should try – It has to be an event at Spa, the track is iconic, local marshals are fantastic and the racing is always exciting. Plus it’s easy to apply for and get accepted.
Why do you think marshalling is a good hobby – If you’re interested in cars or bikes and want to feel part of something and like to travel a little or a lot, then why not do just that by getting up close to the action. You get the proper training, there is no pressure, it’s voluntary so you don’t need to commit to anything you don’t want to do. Most importantly meeting people with the same interests and making amazing new friends along the way.
What would you say to anyone thinking about starting marshalling – Don’t think just do. It was the best decision I ever made and the places marshalling has taken me, I’d never have dreamed of when I started. There is no reason not to give it a try at least once. Yes, there are very early starts, long days and the weather isn’t always good, but there is a lot of fun to be had on post as well as a lot of information from the team you are on post with. For your first day, ask as many questions as you possibly can as no doubt the answers will be there and there is nothing like a silly question.
